چکیده

In this paper, an analytical model for evaluating the performance of a packet scheduling algorithm, called lookahead scheduling, is proposed. Using lookahead scheduling, each input port of a switch has B packet buffers. A packet arrives at an input port is scheduled for conflict-free transmission for up to B time slots in advance. If it cannot be scheduled for transmission in the next B slots, the packet is immediately dropped to prevent it from blocking the subsequently arrived packets. To evaluate this scheduling algorithm, we first construct a set of recursive equations for obtaining the buffer occupancy and the probability that a packet cannot be placed into a buffer. Based on that, analytical expressions for switch throughput, packet loss probability and mean packet delay are derived. Analytical results are then compared with the simulations and good agreement is found. A pipeline implementation of the lookahead scheduling is also proposed in this paper. key words: input-bu ered switch, packet scheduling algorithm,

Performance Evaluation of Variable Packet Size Buffered Crossbar Switches

The crossbar is very popular for the implementation of switches with a moderate number of ports. Unbuffered crossbars (IQ architecture) require complex switch matrix scheduling algorithms that operate on fixed-size cells. On the other hand, buffered crossbars (CICQ architecture), use small buffers at the crosspoints and provide excellent features; scheduling is simplified and variable-size pack...

Providing Performance Guarantees for Buffered Crossbar Switches without Speedup

Buffered crossbar switches are special crossbar switches with each crosspoint equipped with a small exclusive buffer. The crosspoint buffers decouple input ports and output ports, and simplify switch scheduling. In this paper, we propose a scheduling algorithm called Fair and Localized Asynchronous Packet Scheduling (FLAPS) for buffered crossbar switches, to provide tight performance guarantees...

RPA: a flexible scheduling algorithm for input buffered switches

This paper presents and evaluates a quasi-optimal scheduling algorithm for input buffered cell-based switches, named reservation with preemption and acknowledgment (RPA). RPA is based on reservation rounds where the switch input ports indicate their most urgent data transfer needs, possibly overwriting less urgent requests by other input ports, and an acknowledgment round to allow input ports t...

Performance Evaluation of Packet-to-Cell Segmentation Schemes in Input Buffered Packet Switches

Most input buffered packet switches internally segment variable-length packets into fixed-length cells. The last cell in a segmented packet will contain overhead bytes if the packet length is not evenly divisible by the cell length. Switch speed-up is used to compensate for this overhead. In this paper, we develop an analytical model of a single-server queue where an input stream of packets is ...

Performance Analysis of Cell and Packet Switch with Finite Input Queues and Ilpf Scheduling Algorithm

In this paper, packet loss probability performance in cell-based and packet-based switches with finite Input Queues (IQ) and iLPF scheduling algorithm are analysed. This algorithm has been proposed as a practical scheduling algorithm to achieve 100% throughput in cell-based switches. The scheduling algorithm is implemented in three cases: cellbased (CB-iLPF) switching, packet-based (PB-iLPF) sw...
